Yatai Chez Rémy: A popular French food stall in Tenjin, Fukuoka

Tenjin is the district with the highest number of amazing niche restaurants among the three major food stall districts in Fukuoka. This time, we visited a tasteful food stall owned and run by a Frenchman who is loved by everyone!

Tenjin, Fukuoka, is the busiest entertainment/shopping district in the Kyushu region with many shops and restaurants, and the streets get packed with food stalls at night. Among the countless food stalls, Yatai Chez Rémy stands out for its unique charm. Run by a cheery Frenchman, Rémy-san (meaning “Mr. Rémy”), this popular food stall always has a line of people waiting to enjoy his humor, hospitality, and delicious dishes. Here is our report from our visit to Yatai Chez Rémy.

You will notice it right away as it has a stylish appearance.

When we got there, there was already a line even before its 6 p.m. opening time. The two of us wasted no time and got in line. While we were waiting in line, a friendly staff member, also French, came to take orders. It seems like they cook the dishes while customers are still in the line and finish cooking by the time their seats become available. We decided to start off with glasses of wine and two food items.

The owner, Rémy-san, is very entertaining.

The restaurant finally opens, and customers are taken to their seats. As we sat down, our food and drinks came out right away. This kind of speediness is what we love about food stalls! First, house wine and their famous Quiche of the Day came out. The fillings of the quiche change daily, so go find out for yourself what’s inside! Our quiche was loaded with vegetables, such as Brussels sprouts and pumpkin, and was very tasty with their natural sweetness.

Next, Plump Shrimp Ajillo came out. As its name suggests, the large, plump shrimps are so delicious! Their special garlic oil really makes the drinks go down easy. We recommend that you order Freshly Baked Bread so that you can enjoy the remaining oil for bread dipping!

Two more dishes that we additionally ordered came out. Exquisite Escargot features large and tender escargot meat that goes perfectly with the garlic butter sauce. Pumpkin Gnocchi, which is served in a hot iron skillet, has a comforting taste with rich white sauce and sweet pumpkin.

Getting nicely boozed up, we ordered the French Style Melt-in-your-mouth Pork Trotters and Garlic Toast that everyone around us was enjoying. Crispy on the outside and melty on the inside, the pork trotters are so tasty! They are lightly flavored and go really well with whole grain mustard. The garlic toast that is soaked with garlicky butter is just as good as expected.

Yatai Chez Rémy is so popular that it has a 45-minute time limit per party. Think about what you want to order in advance so that you can make the most of your time there! Casual conversations with Rémy-san are also enjoyable, making you want to go there again even more. Fun conversations and authentic home-style French dishes with reasonable prices—Yatai Chez Rémy is definitely a must-go spot when you are in Fukuoka!
