Three Bunmeido products available at Narita Airport (One of them is airport exclusive!)

Bunmeido is a confectioner that has been loved by the Japanese for over 120 years since 1900. In this article, we would like to introduce three Bunmeido products that are available at Narita Airport and recommended as a souvenir!

Bunmeido was founded by Yasugoro Nakagawa in the town of Maruyama, Nagasaki Prefecture in 1900. Later, his younger brother Jinzaemon Miyazaki opened its shop in Tokyo. Ever since, it has always been loved by the people, with the familiar catch phrase of “castella first, phone number is 2.” In this article, we would like to introduce three recommended products from the long-established confectioner.

The first one is Go-san Castella (meaning “five-three castella”) featuring the deep, rich flavor of egg yolk.

It was named after the fact that the ratio of egg yolk and white is 5:3 as “go” is “five” and “san” is “three” in Japanese. The castella has a deep and rich flavor of egg yolk as it contains a higher amount of egg yolk than normal castella. It also has a moist, smooth texture from keeping the amount of flour to the minimum. Moreover, the Wasanbon sugar made in Tokushima Prefecture and the linden honey produced in Hokkaido draw out the rich flavor of eggs even further, and the coarse sugar gives it a nice, moist texture. It is the ultimate castella—a culmination of 100 years of castella making. It is a perfect souvenir for your loved ones.

The second one is a dorayaki pancake called Tsukimikasa. The dough is both smooth and airy, and the Hokkaido red bean filling has a nice and light sweetness. It is slightly smaller than normal dorayaki pancakes, so it is perfect as a snack for children or when you’ve got a bit of a craving.

Made to resemble the view of a moonlit night at the Mt. Mikasa in Nara. It’s small in size, so it is also a good choice as an evening snack. Tsukimikasa / 5 pcs. Tax-free price ¥800 8 pcs. Tax-free price ¥1,280

The third one is Bunmeido Kogumaneki Castella which came out on August 29. This is Bunmeido’s first product made in collaboration with Narita Airport Tax-free shop Fa-So-La. It is available exclusively at the Fa-So-La stores. Not only does it have an elegant aroma of honey and a rich flavor of egg yolk, but it also has a cute design featuring Bunmeido’s mascot and Fa-So-La’s beckoning cat mascot, so it is guaranteed to delight its recipients!
