What would you like to do during winter in Japan? Let’s go to the port city of Yokohama for the illuminations!
If you want to make a special memory during winter in Japan, don’t miss out on Yokohama Night Illuminations 2024-25. The port city with both historical buildings and modern skyscrapers turns into a fantastical world of lights.
Yokohama Night Illuminations 2024-25 is being held for the first time from November 1, 2024, through March 2, 2025, as a mega event that will light up the tourist destinations and shopping streets of Yokoyama. To increase the flow of people among the towns, the towns in the entire city of Yokohama are connected by lights, from the grass field of Shinko Central Square to the ginkgo trees along Yamashita Park Avenue.
The towns across the entire city of Yokohama are all connected by lights
The biggest highlight of the event would probably be “Yokohama Lights Seen by Night: Yorunoyo 2024” that will be held from December 5 through 30, 2024. Under the theme of “Port of Falling Stars,” 42 facilities, including public facilities, hotels, and art museums are taking part.
The Highlights of Yokohama, a spectacular five-minute show of lights and sounds, transforms the entire port city into one gigantic stage of a light show. The show is performed nine times a day (five minutes each, every thirty minutes between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.), and the view can be best enjoyed from the rooftop of the Osanbashi Yokohama International Passenger Terminal.
The Highlights of Yokohama gives you a grand show worthy of Yokohama
At Yokohama Port’s symbolic Osanbashi, an international passenger terminal, one of Japan’s largest participatory projection mappings is displayed. Walking on the light show reflected on the undulating wooden deck surface lets you have a dreamy experience as if you are really drifting in the shimmering ocean with a whale and its calf.

At Yamashita Park, from which you can enjoy an amazing view of the Yokohama Bay Bridge and of the ships coming and going at the port, an artistic light show titled “Star Tree” is held on a grand scale of 250 meters. The way the lights change with the movement of people looks as if stars are falling down onto the ground.

Moreover, historic passenger ship Hikawa Maru as well as Yokohama’s symbolic Yokohama Marine Tower are also lit up with special lights, coloring the nightscape beautifully.
To liven up the event, a rap duo called “chelmico” released a new song titled “LIGHT UP.” Check out the lyrics, as they include references to the city of Yokohama and the illuminations.

The event location, the city of Yokohama, is also studded with attractive tourist spots such as the Red Brick Warehouse and Chinatown. Enjoying sightseeing during the day and immersing yourself in the fantastical world of lights from dusk—that would be a perfect trip plan to efficiently enjoy Yokohama to the full, a city that shows you different faces throughout the day.
