Revived after more than a century, let's go see Akita's great "Lantern Castle in the Sky”!

Huge lanterns over 20 meters high are paraded through the streets. If you are in Japan in August, Akita Prefecture's "Lantern Castle in the Sky" is well worth seeing. Let's take a deeper look at its charms.

The Noshiro Tanabata Festival is a traditional festival held in Noshiro City, Akita Prefecture, located on the Sea of Japan side of the Tohoku region, and is said to have started in 1700s Edo Japan. According to historical sources, the lanterns were created during the Tempo period (1830-1844) to resemble Nagoya Castle, whose trademark is the Kinshachi.

The lanterns are said to have grown larger in size because they were modeled after Nagoya Castle.

Following the industrial modernization after the Second World War, however, power lines were installed throughout the city, limiting the height of the lanterns to 7-8 meters. However, with the completion of underground power lines along the main roads in 2013, the giant lanterns have been revived after almost a century, based on photos taken 100 years ago. Combined with local people's strong desire to preserve traditional local culture, the Lantern Castle in the Sky has once again been revived as a colorful summer event.

Among the giant lanterns that have become symbolic of the festival, "Chikasue," named after a former local authority, stands a vast 24.1 meters tall. The sight of the 17.6-meter-high "Karoku" parading through the streets alongside it is an overwhelming presence to behold. When lit up, these lanterns look like magical castles floating through the night sky.

The event is usually held the first week of August. In 2024, the event is scheduled for August 2 and 3.
