The charm of Edo kiriko—Japanese craftsmanship that has been passed down in Tokyo

Edo kiriko is a type of traditional craft that has been passed down in Tokyo. With beautiful sparkle created through delicate cut patterns, and imbued with highly sophisticated craftsmanship, this glassware vividly reflects Japan’s unique aesthetics.

Edo kiriko originated in 1834 during the late Edo period when Kyubei Kagaya, a glass products merchant in Odenma-cho, Edo, began carving the surface of glassware. Later, during the Meiji period, the making process became more sophisticated and modernized as they incorporated Western cut-glass techniques.

Let’s look at the delicate patterns of Edo kiriko.

What makes Edo kiriko fascinating are the delicate patterns carved on the glass surface. The designs incorporate traditional Japanese patterns. One of them is called “nanako mon.” The way the small, fish scale-like dots are lined up neatly looks as if there are rows of fish eggs, symbolizing abundance and prosperity. “Asa no ha mon” is a geometric pattern inspired by the shape of hemp leaves, and it represents a wish for health and growth. “Yarai mon” is a pattern resembling traditional Japanese bamboo fences, and it is considered to bring good luck while driving away evil spirits.

Edo kiriko making requires highly advanced artisanal skills, and you can find many studios in Koto-ku and Sumida-ku, Tokyo. The entire process is done only by hand. The first step is called “waridashi” in which an artisan draws pattern lines on the surface of a transparent glass or of a glass with a color overlay. The second step is called “arazuri” in which rough cuts are created using a diamond wheel and a grinding stone. After that, the patterns are carved gradually during the third step called ”sanban gake,” followed by a step called “ishi gake” in which the cut surface is processed for more smoothness. Finally, the entire surface of the glass is buffed to maximize the radiance. Each of these steps are extremely delicate and require sophisticated artisanal skills.

Edo kiriko patterns are mainly carved on tableware such as glasses and plates, and Edo kiriko glassware items are very popular as special gifts and commemorative items. In Japan, they are often used in festive and hospitable occasions, and they are loved by the people as craft products for creating a special moment in their daily lives.

When you come to Japan, we truly recommend that you experience the sophisticated beauty of Edo kiriko and appreciate the remarkable skills and aesthetics of traditional Japanese crafts. Their radiance will surely be an unforgettable memory of your trip.
